Today, 3 September 2009 at 17.50, the Winton Train completed the third day of its journey in the Dutch port city of Hoek van Holland. This next-to-last segment of the journey to London measured 295 km and took just under seven hours. Inside the train, the trip went by very quickly and a cheerful and friendly atmosphere prevailed. Most of Winton’s children met shortly after lunch in a carriage to exchange addresses and telephone numbers in order to remain in contact. Winton Train journey participants boarded a ferry in Hoek van Holland, aboard which they spent the night. The historic train which brought them all to the port set off that same day back to its depots.
At the port, Winton’s children and other passengers were welcomed by Stena line Director Pim de Lange, Representative of the City of Hoek van Holland Tom Brower, Czech Ambassador in the Netherlands Petr Mareš and Deputy Head of Mission of the British Embassy Bob Fairweather. After the festive welcome there was a screening of Matej Mináč’s documentary film The Strength of Humanity followed by embarkation onto the ferry and a group dinner.
On the web pages www.wintontrain.eu the current position of the Winton Train is tracked on an interactive map and there are also photographs and messages from participants available for free download.
